Homeschool room ideas (2024)

Many families are rethinking their spaces to teach their kids – here are the best and most creative homeschool room ideas to help you start the design process.

Now that we’ve decided that we’re going to be homeschooling this year, my mind goes immediately into the space where we’ll be homeschooling.

Obviously as someone who is passionate about the atmosphere in our homes and creating spaces that work well for our family, designing a space that functions well for my kids to learn is of major importance to me.

BUT let me be clear. Your homeschool room does NOT have to be Pinterest worthy. It does not have to be designer. It does not have to cost a lot of money!

By gathering up some great homeschool rooms in this post, I want you to feel inspired and get ideas on how to make your own space that can function best for your family. But I don’t want you to leave here feeling discouraged if making a space like this isn’t possible in your home right now.

Now that we’re all together for the inspiration – let’s get going!

Follow me on Instagram as I share how we’re creating a space for our kids to be homeschooled this year!

UPDATED TO ADD:

We finished the homeschool space! And I couldn’t love it any more! I am so thankful we were able to incorporate this learning space into our living room, and it’s been functioning so well for us already. Come see all the details about how we built it and what we plan on doing for Phase 2 of the project here!

Beautiful and functional homeschool room ideas:

Since we don’t actually have a separate ROOM for homeschooling, we will be using our living room. We’ve got a giant blank wall that I want to transform into a space for our kids to learn and grow, but one that also doesn’t look like I copy and pasted a Kindergarten classroom into the middle of my home. Basically I want the functionality of a well organized and inspiring classroom mixed with Magnolia and Studio McGee vibes. Not too hard, right? Ha! I am well aware it won’t be a magazine worth space (at least not right away) but I AM going to do my best to try!

I personally LOVE this space from The Simplified Farmhouse. It does such a great job blending in with the decor in her home, providing storage, but also a functional space for kids to learn.

The idea of using a big closet to transform into a classroom is kind of perfect. Sadly, we don’t have a closet like this, but if you do, it would work so well!

Of course Joanna Gaines would knock it out of the park when designing a beautiful and functional homeschool room:

My friend Emily from @Our1880Farmhouse has done a beautiful job of making her homeschool room fit in really well with how her kids learn best, and it fits beautifully with her Victorian house.

Homeschool room organization:

I will be the first person to let you know that organization is NOT my strength. But I learned quickly when I was a teacher that it was essential for my classroom to run smoothly. Once I had simple systems in place that helped my classroom be more organized, our whole day went better.

Display books on picture ledges:

I love that this method encourages kid’s independence and will hopefully help use the books you have in a more effective way. This mom used IKEA ledges but you could easily make your own (and I might make ours in our room too…stay tuned!)

Repurposing furniture for homeschooling:

There are so many old armoires on Facebook marketplace and Craigslist – I kind of love the idea of making a really functional and cute desk out of one, and then being able to CLOSE the doors when you’re done for the day. This would work so well in a room that’s used for other purposes when you don’t have a designated homeschool room. This example from Centsational Girl is so cute:

Thrifty homeschool room ideas:

Clipboards can be bought at the dollar store – a thrifty, functional and adorable way to organize your homeschool room and use your wall space.

Make over a milk crate with some minimal time and effort to make a double duty seat + storage!

Homeschooling in a small space:

You have to check out this fold-away STEAM table – I just love it so much! This is perfect for smaller spaces where you can use your wall space – and also just helps everything to be packed up neatly at the end of your learning day.

And when you’re in a small space, using your vertical space (walls) is a MUST! I love this adorable example:

Inexpensive Homeschool essentials:

I’m trying hard not to buy alllll the products for homeschooling, but to work on getting through some time as a homeschool family before I really make bigger purchases. Hopefully, this way we can see what we truly need. But there are many basic essentials that are pretty reasonably priced that I am considering purchasing for our homeschool room – here are some of them!
