The best classic Belgian waffles

When I realized we didn’t have a classic Belgian waffles recipe on Broma I was so ashamed. Like…how have we gone this long without the ultimate breakfast sweet on the site. So, obviously we set out to make the best Belgian waffles of all time.Belgian waffles are not for the light hearted. These babies are thiiiiiiiiick, buttery, fluffy, and pretty much cake for breakfast. And guys. They are SO good.

Simply put: pure bliss.

What are Belgian waffles?

Let’s get something straight: Belgian waffles are not just any regular old waffle. They’re thicker, fluffier and have a nice crisp exterior. Normally Belgian waffles are made with yeast, but like…who has time for that? Not this girl. Luckily you can achieve the same delicious texture and flavor with baking powder and whipped egg whites that are folded into the batter. This will guarantee you light, fluffy, and golden waffles.

This Belgian waffle recipe is:

  • Fluffy
  • Light
  • Golden
  • Crispy on the outside
  • Perfectly sweet
  • Full of vanilla flavor
  • Buttery
  • SO GOOD

Ingredients for Belgian waffles

These Belgian waffles may taste like they’re from a fancy hotel’s breakfast menu, but you’ll only need 8 ingredients to make this scrumptious breakfast treat. Because this recipe is so simple it’s very important to use high quality ingredients because they’ll really shine through in the final product.

And when it comes to Belgian waffles it is ALL. ABOUT. THE. BUTTER. We looooooove Vermont Creamery’s Cultured Butter. I might just be their biggest fan. Their cultured butter is made with fresh Vermont Cream from Vermont cows. And it’s cultured, meaning live bacterial cultures are added to the butter (much like in yogurt) to produce an even creamier butter with the ever-so-slightest tang. It’s absolutely incredible slathered over a piece of toast, baked up in your favorite chocolate chip cookies, and obviously in these decadent Belgian waffles.

Get yourself on over to the store and get yourself some. You need it.

How do you make Belgian waffles

While Belgian waffles take a bit more time to make than any old waffle or pancake recipe, this recipe is actually pretty easy to make. But we still broke it down for you so you know exactly how it should look 🙂

Classic Belgian Waffles (10)

STEP ONE: Fire up your waffle iron. You’ll want it to be nice and hot throughout for when your batter is ready.

STEP TWO: Separate your egg whites from your yolks. Place the egg whites in a large bowl and use a hand mixer to beat the egg whites until stiff peaks form.

Tips for the best Belgian waffles

This homemade Belgian waffles recipe is one of my favorites for a special brunch or holiday breakfast. I make them allllll the time, so through trial and error I’ve gathered up my favorite tricks to ensure you get perfect waffles too 🙂

  • Use good butter: Regular waffles usually only have a few tablespoons of butter, but Belgian waffles are a different story. These homemade Belgian waffles are a decadent breakfast treat and your butter will make or break the final product. So make sure you grab yourself some Vermont Creamery Cultured Butter 🙂
  • Don’t overmix the batter: Like pancake batter, you’ll want your waffle batter to be a bit lumpy. Plus, a lot of that scrumptious fluffiness comes from the separately whipped egg whites. If you mix the batter too much it can deflate it and leave you with flat waffles.
  • Make sure your waffle iron is *hot*: The key to that crisp, golden exterior is a HOT HOT HOT waffle iron. This will give you that nice sizzling crunch on the outside while still preserving that fluffy middle.

What to serve Belgian waffles with

I always think the sign of a good waffle is one that doesn’t need any extra toppings to be delicious. But that certainly doesn’t mean that extra toppings won’t make these already delicious waffles taste even better. Some of my favorite foods to top these waffles with are:

  • Whipped Cream: I feel like I don’t even need to explain this one. Everything tastes better with a healthy dose of whipped cream. Whether it’s from the can or freshly whipped, you can’t go wrong.
  • Butter: If you couldn’t tell from the paragraph of professing my love to Vermont Creamery’s Cultured Butter above…I’m pretty much a butter monster. Butter makes everything better, especially when it melts into little butter pools in every valley of your homemade Belgian waffles. DROOLING.
  • Fresh Fruit: Mixing in a little fruit means you can say you’re having a “balanced” breakfast, but it’s also just pretty tasty. I particularly love topping these fluffy Belgian waffles with berries or bananas!
  • Maple Syrup: I highly recommend splurging on pure maple syrup for the ultimate Belgian waffle breakfast. If you’re feeling really fancy, you can heat it up in the microwave and you’ll feel like you’re dining at the Ritz.
  • Fried Chicken: Okay so this one may seem a little rogue, but chicken and waffles are seriously the best. And who says you can’t eat waffles for dinner? Top them with some crispy fried chicken and drizzle of maple syrup and you have yourself a well rounded meal!
  • Peanut Butter: When I’m looking to add a little extra protein to my breakfast, I like to serve these with a healthy drizzle of peanu butter, some sliced bananas (or strawberries) and a drizzle of honey. If you’re a chocolate person, I also love to add some Nutella in there.

Can you freeze these Belgian waffles?

You sure can! If you want to prep ahead you can make these waffles as directed, let them cool completely and then store in a freezer safe plastic bag for up to 2 months. When you want to eat one, simple pop the waffle in a toaster, or toaster oven to heat it up and get the outside nice and crispy again. If you don’t have a toaster, you can also heat them up on a baking sheet in the oven for 10 minutes. Then top with butter and drizzle with maple syrup so it gets in all those little waffle pockets…duh. Enjoy!

Make all your breakfast dreams come true with this fluffy Belgian waffles recipe. These scrumptious Belgian waffles have a lovely crisp exterior with a light and fluffy inside. Top them with some whipped cream, maple syrup, and fresh berries and you’re in for a treat.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 6 large waffles
  • Category: breakfast
  • Method: iron
  • Cuisine: belgian

Ingredients

  • 2 eggs separated
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup Vermont Creamery Cultured Butter
  • 1 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 Tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 Tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Instructions

    1. Plug in your waffle iron to preheat according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
    2. Seperate your eggs, being careful not to get any yolks into the egg whites. Place the egg yolks in a large bowl and set aside. Place the egg whites into the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment and beat on high until the egg whites form stiff peaks. Set aside.
    3. In a large bowl mix together the egg yolks, sugar, and melted Vermont Creamery Cultured Butter with a whisk. Whisk until smooth. Next, add the milk and the vanilla extract and mix well.
    4. Add the flour, baking powder, and salt and stir until combined, but still lumpy. Do not overmix.
    5. Last, add the whipped egg whites to the batter and use a rubber spatula to gently fold to combine. Fold until no streaks of egg whites remain, but do not over mix.
    6. Spray the waffle iron with nonstick spray and spoon in the amount of batter recommended by the manufacturer (it was about 1 cup for our machine).
